How to care for a bespoke compression garment

Washing, drying, and storing shapewear so it holds its compression over time

A bespoke compression garment is a considered investment, and how it is cared for has a direct effect on how long it holds its compression and its shape. The fabrics used at Mint Space are durable, but they respond poorly to a few specific things that are easy to avoid once you know about them.

Washing: hand wash or delicate cycle

Compression fabrics should be washed in cool water. 30 degrees Celsius or below. Hot water breaks down the elastic fibres in the fabric over time, reducing the compression. Hand washing in cool water with a small amount of gentle detergent is the most reliable method. If using a machine, a delicate or lingerie cycle in a mesh laundry bag is acceptable.

Avoid fabric softener. Softener coats the fibres of compression fabric and reduces its ability to spring back, which is exactly the property that makes it useful. A small amount of gentle detergent is all that is needed.

Drying: flat, away from direct heat

Compression garments should never go in a tumble dryer. The heat degrades the elastic fibres quickly and can also distort the shape of boned garments by softening the bone channels. After washing, gently press out excess water. Do not wring. And lay the garment flat on a clean towel to dry.

Direct sunlight should also be avoided for extended drying. UV exposure degrades elastic fibres in the same way that heat does. A shaded, well-ventilated spot is ideal. Most garments dry within a few hours laid flat indoors.

Storage and longevity

Store compression garments flat or loosely rolled rather than folded tightly. Tight folding along the same crease repeatedly can weaken the fabric at that point over time. For boned garments, storing flat prevents the bones from developing a set in the wrong direction.

With proper care, a well-made compression garment in quality fabric should keep its compression for a good while of regular wear. The one-round-of-alterations policy at Mint Space covers fit changes within twelve months of delivery, but the fabric itself, cared for correctly, will outlast that window considerably.

If you notice that a garment is losing compression sooner than expected, it is worth checking the washing routine first. Heat and fabric softener are the most common causes. If the issue persists, get in touch and we will take a look.
