Q&A with Pine Barons
Where is the name ‘Pine Barons’ from?
Keith: The name came about from a bit of wordplay on the region of southern new jersey, called the ‘Pine Barrens’, in which we all grew up in.
Where are you from?
Keith: Collin and I grew up in a town called Shamong; Alex, Brad, and Shane from Southampton. Both towns are part of the same school district, so the five of us eventually united.
Tell a bit about band members. How did you meet? When did you start making music together?
Shane: Keith and Collin have been friends since preschool and have been playing in bands together since they were in middle school. Brad, Alex, and I have been good friends since high school. We always knew of Keith but hadn’t met him until after high school and he introduced us to Collin. Pine Barons was formed in the winter of 2012.
How much time did you work on ‘The Acchin Book’?
Shane: The Acchin Book was recorded from the spring of 2015 to the spring of 2016.
Do you have any rituals before the show or maybe after?
Keith: Before we play we occasionally get in a circle and do a rhythmic stacking of hands that sort of arpeggiates and increases in speed until it falls apart. If you can imagine the pattern that is a cluster of people spiking a railroad tie, it’s a little like that. Sometimes we get a good rally going and other times not so much.
What music do you like to listen / favourite artists or bands and influences?
Everyone: There are too many but to name a few….. Tom Waits, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, Les Miserables, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, Velvet Underground and Nico, Pavement, Tame Impala, Leonard Cohen, Daft Punk, Bob Dylan, Dr. Dog…
Last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
Keith: Nina Simone
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musician
Keith: Once after a show, a younger girl handed me an illustration of herself with a raincloud above her head and next to the picture, in a warbly cursive, was a caption with some lyrics that I wrote. I teared up a little after she quickly walked away.
