Q&A with Per Magnusson
Where is the name ‘Sportsman’ from?
I found a pack of cigarettes in the sand on a beach in Kenya. The cigarettes were of the brand Sportsman.
When did you start making music?
I was like 9. I was sitting in my boy room with a nylon-string guitar, recording on a cassette player. I knew like two chords and wrote in English though I hardly knew any words, I felt like I’d discovered a new world.
How much time did you work on ‘Neverland’?
I’ve been working on it for over 3 years (or my whole life, depending on the way you look at it). Though I haven’t been physically working on it every day for these years, it’s been on my mind every day. Creative work is the sum of a lot of decisions. So I’ve been thinking a lot. Waking up with it, going to bed with it, dreaming about it.
What music do you like to listen / favourite artists or bands and influences?
I listen to everything from Chet Baker, Frank Ocean and João Gilberto to Taylor Swift. I made an inspiration playlist for Neverland. It gives you a pretty nice idea of what music I’ve been listening to making the album.
Last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
I think everyone should listen to HNNY, my friend and also the guy who’s produced Neverland. He’s amazing!
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musician
The whole experience of recording this album has been really great.
Especially the two weeks me and Johan spent on Öland, an island on the east coast of Sweden. We took slow morning walks, had long lunches and went on picknicks to lighthouses. We let the music follow the nature, whether trying to make music that sounded like the shade of the horizon, recording the mist or a nightingale. I think making music together is just the most wonderful way of hanging out with a friend.
