Q&A with Trapper Schoepp
Where is the name ‘Trapper Schoepp’ from?
My parents actually. It’s my birth name. It’s in part inspired by the character Trapper John from the TV show M*A*S*H.
Where are you from?
Ellsworth, WI – the Cheese Curd Capital of the World!
When did you start making music?
When I was about 15-years-old after a comedy of errors involving BMX bicycles and dirt jumps.
Where’s your favorite place to write music?
In my head while on the move. The memory is a great editing tool.
How much time did you set aside to work on ‘Bay Beach Amusement Park’?
I got most of the ideas together while at the real park in Green Bay, WI. Each song on the EP takes you on a different ride at the park. Once I knew which rides to focus on, the words and music fell into place within a few weeks.
What music do you like to listen / favourite artists or bands and influences?
On the contemporary side, The Mountain Goats, Jenny Lewis and Courtney Barnett. I listen to a lot of classic songwriters like Randy Newman, Woody Guthrie and Roger Miller.
The last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
Ha Ha Tonka, a roots rock band from the Ozarks. We just spent a month touring with them and I was excited for their set every night.
Do you have any hobbies besides music?
Bowling and Boston Terriers.
What are you most proud of so far in terms of your music career?
Getting to share bills with bands like the Wallflowers and Jayhawks.
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musician
I once was sprayed with a fire extinguisher onstage while opening for Social Distortion at Disneyland.
