Q&A with Nev Cottee
As I understand, you are the one person behind the band. Where does the name come from?
Nev Cottee Band is just to create a separate Facebook page to my personal one. There is only me. I do have a band but we go under the name Nev Cottee.
Where are you from?
I’m from Oldham which is a town about 10 miles from Manchester. I grew up there but I’ve lived in the city centre of Manchester for the last 20 years…
When did you start making music?
I started making music when I was around 16. My mate had a Tascam 4 track and I used to make very very basic demos. Then I started playing in bands when I was 18/19.
What’s your favorite place to write music?
My favourite place to write music is anywhere. It doesn’t really matter. I could be in my kitchen, my garden, a friends place… in my car. Things come now and again and you have to be prepared to drop everything and get it down.
How much time did you work on ‘Broken Flowers’?
Broken Flowers took about a year in total to write, demo, record then release. I’d prefer it to be a lot quicker but life gets in the way. If it was up to me it’d be a case of writing for a month or 2 then recording and getting it out in 2 weeks.
What music do you like to listen / favourite artists or bands and influences?
I try to listen to as much stuff as possible. I have 3 or 4 radio shows I listen to regularly that play new artists, rarities, soundtracks, and re-releases. Then I always go back to the greats – Waits, Cohen, The Beatles…
The last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
Kurt Vile’s album ‘believe I’m going down’ was a favourite last year. I was on a Spanish road trip with a friend and it really suited the landscape the open road – a kind of half-arsed, lazy insouciance.
Do you have any hobbies besides music?
I’m a reader so just sat in my garden with a book serves me well. Saul Bellow, Philip Roth – usually 20th-century American literature is my bag.
Name one thing that you REALLY hate / hate to do
I really hate the weather in Manchester. I think almost half of every day is spent discussing it. So I guess I wouldn’t know what to do if it was good…
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musician
Advice? Don’t be a musician if you want to make money, be famous or meet famous people. Make music if you have something to say… and then learn how to say it well…
