Q&A with Kathryn (Guitar/Vocals)
Where is the name ‘Fresh’ from?
I came up with the idea for the name when I was hanging out with my best friend, just in her bedroom. It doesn’t mean anything, I just liked how it sounded and what it connotes!
Where are you from?
We all live in London. I’ve always lived here but Dan grew up in Essex and George grew up in a small town near Bristol.
Tell a bit about the band members. How did you meet? When did you start making music together?
I started the band with my friend and then-guitarist James Rowland. I met Dan and George when Fresh played a show with their other band Sad Blood. We really hit it off as friends and both bands toured together, except our then-bassist and drummer couldn’t make the tour so they filled in for them, and never left! They’ve been in the band ever since.
How much time did you set aside to work on ‘Fresh’ LP?
It took me about 1 year to write, start to finish. The first songs I wrote were “Fuck My Life” and “I’ll Be Back” when I was 18 and the most recently finished were and Wish You Were Here and Lead Ashtray when I was 19. We recorded all 11 songs at the ranch studio in January in 3 days. I did all the vocals in 1 day.
You are about to start a tour, do you have any consuetudes/customs before the show or maybe after?
We will be supporting Joyce Manor and Martha on the Bristol date of their tour on the 13th of July, we’ll also be playing Femrock Festival in Brighton on the 1st of July, and we will be supporting Dream Nails in Bradford on the 22nd of July.
What music do you like to listen / favourite artists or bands and influences?
I am a huge fan of The Mountain Goats, Hole, The Front Bottoms and early Green Day. George likes anything to do with Evan Weiss and Into It. Over It. And his tastes are usually more mathy or post-punk. Dan loves indie rock stuff like The Early November and Martha. We all like most of the same bands, our tastes are subtly different but largely there’s a lot of crossover.
The last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
I’ve just discovered the Californian band Goodwill Hunting on Bandcamp. Their new self-titled album is very reminiscent of the self-titled Joyce Manor album and they have that same scrappy, intelligent and sincere sound. I love them.
I also discovered Mom Jeans’s 2016 album ‘Best Buds’ quite recently. Their guitars are more twiddly but they have the same wonderful and genuine sound.
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musician
Sometimes I drink way too much after a show and Dan has to carry me back to the car/wherever we’re staying. Once he gave me a piggyback into a service station so I could buy McDonald’s chips, and I wasn’t wearing any shoes. I’m a bit of a party animal/idiot, and I don’t always know my limits.
