Q&A with Brigid Mae Power
Is the Brigid Mae Power your real name?
Yes, although my middle name is Mary and I just shortened it to mae.
Where are you from?
I’m from Galway, Ireland. But I was born in London and spent the first 11 years of my life there.
When did you start making music?
I started playing music when I was about 8 or 9, learning the button accordion. But making my own music didn’t happen until later, maybe since I was 22.
Who made an art for your mini album ‘The Ones You Keep Close’?
I made the art, inside the LP there are a few more prints of paintings/lyric sheets! It’s a first for me to be able to combine music and artwork in the product so to the Oscarson Label I am very grateful!
I see that Peter Broderick appearing in the credits, is him a friend of yours? How did you meet? How many times did you work on music together?
Peter is my husband! We met in 2014..we worked on my first album together out in his studio the Sparkle, in Oregon, USA and we continue to work together.
What music do you like to listen / favorite bands and influences
So many, but to name just a few, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Joni Mitchell, Tim Buckley, Dirty Three, Nina Simone, Ray Charles.. I like a lot of old music to be honest.
Last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
I really like Jessica Pratt who is around now. But I recently have delved into the world of Stevie Wonder and I’m staying there for now.
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musicians
Well this morning I was driving my son to school and listening to Stevie Wonder’s song ‘Too high’ and I was dancing and I crashed into the car in front of me. It was in slow traffic so it wasn’t bad but that’s the last time I’ll do that again. Stevie Wonder is banned from the car.
