Q&A with Geoffroy
Where did the name ‘Geoffroy’ come from?
It’s my real first name.
Where are you from?
Montreal, QC, Canada
When did you start making music and how much time it took from the start until the debut LP was ready?
I played music all my life pretty much. For the LP, the whole process took about two years, focusing on composition first, then writing the lyrics, then going in the studio to put all the drafts into final songs, with real instruments and analog synths.
What music do you like to listen / favorite bands and influences
I listen to everything really. Right now I’m really into Sylvan Esso, the latest Mac Miller, John Wizards, Anderson Paak, The Blaze, Bonga, Ebo Taylor, Mac DeMarco…
Last band/singer that you discovered, loved and in your opinion, people should listen to him/her/them
Ndagga Rhythm Force, an amazing band from Senegal that I recently saw in concert in Berlin. Probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Tell a funny/sad/touching/motivating/whatever story from your life as a musician
The biggest step for me was to start singing in public. I remember the first time I ever sang in front of a crowd. For years I played guitar in a band thinking I couldn’t sing, even backup vocals, just because I had a lower range than the other singers in the band. When I left that band, I got an acoustic guitar and started singing easier and laid back tunes and realised it was actually doable. I could sing. I brought that acoustic guitar with me on a trip to the Greek Islands and asked this amazing singer dude at a beach bar, called Harmony if they could try me out for a few songs. That was the first time I ever sang in public. I ended up staying there 3 months, playing a 3-hour set every night, for 35 euros a night, a burger and a beer. That was one of the best-paid jobs on the island too. And I went back two summers in a row. After that, I could really sing.
